If you struggle to remove everyday stains such as coffee, tea or tobacco with your current manual or electric toothbrush, you might wish to try a sonic toothbrush. The Philips Sonicare HX6731 Healthy White Deluxe sonic toothbrush combines 31,000 brush strokes per minute with a wide range of bristles on the brush to enhance cleaning comfort and stain removal. The Sonicare range has a very good reputation for whitening and stain removal, as well as comfort. Let’s see how it stacks up against the competition.

Whilst not one of the more expensive electric toothbrushes on the market, this brush is still rather feature packed.

The brush has 3 built-in cleaning modes. One of these is a specially designed “clean and white” mode, which provides 2 minutes of general cleaning, with 30 seconds of focussed whitening for the front teeth. Philips claims that you’ll have noticeably whiter teeth within just a few weeks of using the the clean and white mode (we’ll check out what the customers say about that shortly). It also has a built-in is a sensitive mode, for those with more sensitive teeth and gums.

The brush also has an array of built-in timers. A QuadPacer timer indicates when you should switch to another section of the mouth, ensuring a balanced brushing. Also included is a SmartTimer which lets the user know when they can stop brushing (making sure you get the dentist-recommended 2 minute clean).

The package also includes 2 pro-results brush heads, a travel case, and a hygienic travel cap. The battery provides 20 two minute cleanings on a single charge, enough for around 10 days of use.

Customer Reviews and Feedback

This is a very popular electric toothbrush! We’ve taken a look at hundreds of customer reviews, and well over 90% where extremely positive 4 or 5 star reviews. Users of the brush commonly pointed to the good value of this toothbrush, which has a lot of features (such as long battery life) but is actually quite a lot cheaper than other sonic toothbrushes.

“I would never have considered an expensive electric toothbrush before, but was recommended one by my dentist. As yet I haven’t had to floss. I use the toothbrush every day and my teeth are whiter already. They also feel much cleaner.”

Many customers also mentioned that they found the clean and white mode very effective in removing staining, with a lot of customers reporting that their teeth were distinctly whiter after several weeks of use. Philip’s claims about enjoying whiter teeth after 2 weeks have been backed up by the customers. Smokers, and red wine drinkers even praised the stain removal abilities of the brush!

Several reviewers commented that they found the way the handset gradually increases its sped over the first few weeks to be very useful. People with sensitive teeth and gums are often worried about moving to a sonic toothbrush, and easing the speed up is a very handy feature, giving you time to get used to the speed. Indeed, people who were concerned that their gums may be too sensitive for a sonic toothbrush were impressed with how gentle the brush is; many said that bleeding which they’d experienced with manual brushing stopped completely when they started using this brush.

“I have to keep smiling now just to show off my brighter teeth, they look like I have spent a fortune at the dentist, but I’ve spent less than the cost of one dental checkup.”

Alessi

One of the negative points that we noticed was that you need to turn the toothbrush on in order to switch between the modes, however since you’re not likely to want to switch modes in-between brushing it doesn’t seem to be a big problem on the face of it.

Overall, with the vast majority of customers giving the HealthyWhite Deluxe a 4 or 5 star review, particularly pointing out its good value, we have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone looking for a new electric toothbrush.

It’s not quite as feature packed as a high end brush such as the Oral B 5000, however the stain removal the Sonicare HX6731 provides is excellent. Anyone wanting to improve their dental health, and better remove stains would be served by this brush. 4 stars overall.

The Good
Noticeably whiter and stain-free teeth
Good value for money
Gentle and suitable for sensitive teeth and gums
Week long battery life on a single charge
The Bad
Brushing mode can only be changed while the brush is switched on, however it’s unlikely anyone would want to change it in-between brushings.
