If you’re in the market for a new sonic toothbrush, the Philips Sonicare HX6972 Flexcare Plus electric toothbrush could well be for you. Philips Sonicare has an extremely good reputation, and many people swear by them for their cleaning, whitening and stain removing ability. The Sonicare HX6972 is a big seller and one of the most advanced brushes available – this is the brush that Philips hope can challenge the Triumph 5000 from Oral-B as the market leader, so we’re going to take it for a test drive. Is it any good? Let’s take a look.

The brush has 5 different brushing modes, and generates a whole 31,000 brush strokes per minute. Philips patented sonic technology drives fluid between teeth and along the gumline to reduce the need for flossing.

Uniquely, the toothbrush also comes with a UV Sanitiser unit which actually cleans your brush heads in-between brushes, killing 99% of bacteria. It has a built in Quadpacer and Smartimer which encourages dentist-recommended two minute brushing, and the handset advises the user when to move onto different areas of the mouth.

It also comes with 2 contoured brush heads, travel case, travel charger, and is guaranteed for 2 years. Incredibly, you can brush for 3 weeks on a single charge. Philips have put together an excellent package here.

Sonicare FlexCare+ Reviews

Having examined and read through all the reviews available of the Sonicare HX6972, we can report that the massive majority of reviews were very positive. In fact, 97% of all reviews rated this sonic electric toothbrush very highly, with 4 or 5 star ratings.

“Well worth the price and in terms of tooth-brushing – does a bang up job.”

Animasola

First of all, one of the features that people appreciated in this brush was the way that when you first use it, the speed gradually increases over the first couple weeks giving you time to get used to using. Reviewers with sensitive teeth liked this feature, and said that they had no discomfort in changing from an ordinary brush to a sonic toothbrush. However, this option can be easily turned off if the user is not new to sonic brushing.

Most of the reviews that we studied pointing to the excellent whitening and stain removing abilities of this brush. One reviewer remarked that she thought she had very white teeth before she began using it, but this toothbrush made them whiter still. Several reviewers noted that, as coffee/wine/tea drinkers, they had noticed a marked improvement in the whiteness of their teeth. All in all, almost all of the reviews expressed that they were very impressed with the cleaning results after a couple of weeks, so Philips’ claims of superior brushing do seem to stand up.

“Gentle on your gums and serious on your teeth, the plaque doesn’t stand a chance!”

Denise

People with sensitive teeth also mentioned that the brush was gentle enough for them, causing no pain or bleeding. In fact, one reviewer commented that gum pain that she had experienced with a manual toothbrush had completely gone away since she began brushing with this brush.

There were very few negative comments about this toothbrush. The most common negative point mentioned, was that some people were not convinced that the UV Sanitiser was really necessary. That said, a significant amount of people also stated that they were happy to know that the bacteria on their brush heads was being removed in-between brushes. If you’re not interested in the UV Sanitiser, then you might want to save yourself some money and take a look at the HX6731 model instead.

Personally, we think that people tend to forget that plaque is simply a build of bacteria on teeth, and that removing that bacteria is the reason for brushing. Bacteria from your mouth grow and breed on your brush, and then just go right back inside your mouth when you brush again. The UV sanitiser addresses this problem, so for our money, it is a very worth-while feature – you can be certain the brush you’re putting in your mouth is as clean as possible.

We noticed during reviewing that some people were so impressed, that they actually bought a 2nd handset (either as a backup or for a family member).

The Sonicare HX6972 is clearly a fantastic sonic electric toothbrush, and one of the best electric toothbrush models around. The wealth of positive reviews, and the lack of any customer complaints or negativity certainly backs up the quality of this product. For that reason, we have absolutely no problem in recommending this as a sonic toothbrush; it’s got everything going for it and earns an excellent 4 stars. This brush is definitely a winner.

The Good
Almost 100% positive customer feedback
Outstanding cleaning, whitening and stain removing
Gentle enough for those with sensitive teeth and gums
Long battery life
The Bad
Customers were divided on the usefulness of the UV Sanitiser, however, we don’t think that having bacteria-free brushes is something that counts against the brush.
